In 1993 we were photographing the dogs at my studio on Bond St in NYC. I had them on the floor, lying on white canvas and was photographing them with a polaroid camera and black & white film. I was shooting them from above, molding them into various lines and shapes. One configuration, a circle, looked like the letter “O”. A friend suggested we try other letters. So we did. A to Z and then numbers 1 to 10, and then on to punctuation. Moving the dogs across the canvas and placing them in position became a continuous, and occasionally puzzling, preoccupation. The project took about a week to complete. Later that year, we videotaped the dogs performing the letters again, carefully arranging them and then calling them away. By running the video backwards, it appears that the dogs did it all themselves.
